Game Changer in Malaysia’s Politics

Today until GE15 and even after the results showing which party has won and which coalition will form the next government, we will be reading daily reports of the seat bargaining taking place among the component parties of the various coalitions and sub coalitions that currently dominate Malaysia’s political system. Some readers will think that they are watching what is going on in the pasar malam with all the haggling taking place.

The negotiations and bargaining go on largely behind the scenes. But they are occasionally leaked to the media so that they can be used for the advantage of the particular leaky party or leader!

All this action is part of the coalition driven political institutional system that has been found since independence and which, after an initial period of success, has not produced the political stability, power sharing and better governance that Malaysians are looking for. Worse, they have helped preserve the racially and religiously based parties which are responsible for the dark forces changing
Malaysia.

What can be the game changer or game changers to the dark forces of race and religious politics that have poisoned the coalition political system?

Malaysians continue to think and wonder and hope?

Will we see more of the same? Is a second tsunami coming? And if it comes will there be a transformation or will it be the status quo or perhaps, one step forward and two backwards.

We have to recognize that the dark forces have very deep roots. They go back a long way in our political history and have penetrated into every key aspect of life.

We have lessons from other parts of the world on the fate of movements for change and reform. One or two swallows does not make a summer or even spring.

What happened with the Arab spring which began as a protest against corruption, authoritarianism, economic stagnation and poverty and now is more of the same warns us of the long road ahead.

To me - the historical evidence is clear. This is that the coalition party system a la Alliance, Barisan
Nasional, even Pakatan and now Perikatan and whatever ruling coalition emerges after GE 15 has not worked in bringing Malaysians together.

So the question is - looking at and beyond GE 15 - can we give up coalitions of the willing and less willing, bed partners of convenience, big tent approaches, etc which have put our elected YBs into electoral party silos which have reinforced racial and religious divides and have also been responsible for many of the challenges that we face - in politics and other sectors of economic and social life.

What is needed is not the formation of new political hybrids and hydras based on racial or religious membership and interest and in which national interest has become secondary.

What is required is an entirely different approach to Malaysia’s party politics. A new tent inclusive approach composed of the present parties dissolving themselves and setting up a new, and for the first time in Malaysia, a single multiracial party.

Can the current opposition parties dissolve themselves and merge to bring about one single, one genuinely multiracial party.

Can PKR, DAP, Amanah, PSM as the longest lived parties all claiming to share a multiracial platform join forces with Warisan and Muda and other young parties to open a new page in Malaysian politics by establishing a single multiracial party?

If this can happen, think about how this can transform Malaysian politics.

How this can break up the racial and religious silos.

How this emergence of a single multiracial party can provide young Malaysians the catalyst for rebooting a decaying political system.

For this to happen we will need 2 forces of light to fight against and to counter the dark forces:

The first is leadership and statesmanship from Anwar, Shafie Apdal, Rafizi, Mat Sabu, Guan Eng,Loke, Syed Saddiq, and others from Bersatu and other parties that reject ethno-religious politics and are committed to breaking through the institutional frameworks of prejudice and divisiveness that have come with previous coalition parties.

The second is public pressure.

How to break away from the limitations and vices of coalition party governments which have debased the concept of power sharing

How to neutralise racial and religious based parties which have gained increasing ascendancy in the coalition governments of Malaysia. .

How to establish a single multiracial party to emerge from the present coalitions ? This applies to both the ruling and opposition parties.

And to the media - how to pursue this subject by getting feedback from ordinary Malaysians on whether they will support the establishment of a unified, inclusive multiracial party. Putting this out in the public limelight will enable the topic to also be part of the agenda of the present political parties.

The challenge is how to look beyond the noise and thunder of 15th GE and party rivalries, seat allocation issues, personality conflicts and other coalition election related issues and to break free and provide our younger generation with a game changer in the political system of Malaysia.

For a single multiracial party to emerge, conventional assumptions, prejudices and enmities must be put aside.

If the strategists in each party can see the potential, and work out of the box, there is still an opportunity to save the country from the tyranny of political opportunism, race and religion which has brought Malaysia to this failed and further falling stage; and in which the current configuration of coalition party system and politics has played a key role.

This single multiracial party has been the missing phase of development in Malaysian politics. GE15 and its aftermath can provide the opening to correct it, and move Malaysians to a new era dealing with economic, technological and environmental challenges.
